The culinary offerings here are a celebration of classic Spanish flavors, with highlights that cater beautifully to diverse tastes. Vegetarians will appreciate the variety of delicious tapa options, such as crispy patatas bravas and savory croquetas, while seafood enthusiasts can indulge in expertly seasoned piri piri prawns and hearty garlic mushrooms. The paella, a signature dish, delivers a rich, satisfying experience that reflects the true essence of the region’s coastal cuisine. Pair your meal with one of their fantastic cocktails or their renowned sangria, served generously by the pitcher, to complete your visit.
Beyond the food, the ambiance adds to the charm. The restaurant boasts a lovely backyard that opens onto a cathedral, blending historic beauty with a relaxed dining environment. It’s a busy hub where locals and visitors mingle, enjoying cheap wine, great beer, and vibrant art that enlivens the space. Whether you’re dropping by for a late-night drink after a flight or settling in for a leisurely meal, the laid-back bar staff make every visit memorable — with a touch of humor and a willingness to engage in a bit of language exchange for those brushing up their Spanish.
While a few moments of slow service have been noted, the overall value, quality of food, and respectful, courteous treatment by the staff more than compensate, making Restaurante Océano Playa a place worth returning to. Its prime location near key landmarks and reasonable prices only add to its appeal. If you find yourself in Isla Cristina, this restaurant deserves a spot on your must-visit list for genuine tastes of Spain paired with a lively, friendly atmosphere.
“ Lovely little hidden gem that we discovered on our walk through the city! Dave was friendly, helpful, and very attentive, even though it was NYE. I'm a vegetarian and it was nice to have so many delicious tapa options available. I took some photos, but some are half-eaten. Their sangria is my favorite in Barcelona, and available by the pitcher. We had the patatas bravas, meatballs, croquetas, aubergines, and potato omelet. We only stopped our sampling because we were full- everything was phenomenal! We walked in while a cocktail class was taking place, and even got signed up for tomorrow! So excited to be going back so soon. Highly recommended for a great night out! ”
“ Busy hub, cheap wine, friendly folks, beer, great art. Open late for very late flight arrivals. Drop by for a nightcap. I will make this my regular spot. ”
“ Stopped in for a small bite. The restaurant was slow as was the service. I sat at the bar and was ignored. A couple came and sat behind me and the server went to them First. I asked if I could sit and order at the bar so not sure why I was ignored. After he got their order he came to me. It took 10 minutes for my drink to arrive even though only ordered a glass of Cava and sitting at the bar. Another 20 Minutes for my food which was the puri puri shrimp. I believe a manager was sitting at the bar as well because he scolded the bartender for describing a beer to a customer as fruity instead of citrus. The flavors of the shrimp were delicious (first time having puri puri) however the shrimp was not split and cleaned. I had garlic shrimp at a different restaurant the day before and that shrimp was split and cleaned. Instead I was peeling with my hands and pulling out the vein. The angry manager should have his staff be more attentive and clean the shrimp. ”
“ We meet there for paella experience. That was great, the bar itself is not the best of downtown. We went there after paella for the dessert and they said that cheesecake was over but suddenly they found it was and they offered us but was still frozen!! This destroy the value of the paella 5 star ratting but overall experience was great. ”
“ Both the tapas and cocktails are fantastic, and the backyard opens onto a cathedral. The price-performance ratio is superb. I highly recommend it. ”
